"This Kind Of Choice..."

"I have come gradually to understand that the liberal arts cliché about teaching you how to think is actually shorthand for a much deeper, more serious idea: learning how to think really means learning how to exercise some control over how and what you think. It means being conscious and aware enough to choose what you pay attention to and to choose how you construct meaning from experience. Because if you cannot exercise this kind of choice in adult life, you will be totally hosed."

  1. Truth be known, for the last forty years the so-called liberal arts establishment has struggled in the name of enlightenment to teach us what to think rather than how to think. They have used blanket condemnations as racist or fascist of anything that did not conform to their orthodoxy. Any contrary opinion was not discussed and in many cases was not even allowed to be discussed. Unfortunately for them the human brain tends to rebel at having limitations placed on its inate curiosities. We have just seen a prime example of this contention.
